I had two arbitrary early retirement number goals: 1) 401k balance of $1m and 2) HSA balance of $100k. I hit neither before cleaning out my office. But I understood with a hand wave market return of 10%, some time, and zero withdrawals that I would get there in a year or two.
Turns out with favorable market tailwinds the duration was 1 year. My rollover IRA (formerly 401k) now has a seven figure balance and my HSA six figures. Boxes checked.
And you thought the 60/40 stock/bond portfolio was dead. Because my rollover IRA is the only place we hold bonds other than I bonds, the percentage above skews up. See the allocation pie chart in sidebar for our overall bond percentage.
First half 2024 is on the books and returns for the total US stock market and S&P500 were both amazing. Our investment portfolio broke $3M for the first time. Our asset allocation has strayed a bit from our target 80% stocks, 15% bonds, 5% cash. Our cash position includes several money market funds yielding 5% to 5.3%.
Time to purchase some VTI and rebalance my rollover IRA to increase VBTLX and decrease VTSAX. I just need to repeatably tell myself: the market always goes up; don’t try to time the market; don’t bother with dollar cost averaging. It’s worth a shot.
